I love teaching the recorder and have taught at Newland House since 2010. I really enjoy the variety of beginner pupils right up to advanced students and adults. I have been teaching for over 20 years and taught the recorder at the Royal College of Music Junior Department for 12 years. I have also taught at the Purcell School for Young Musicians, St Paul's Girls School, the Harrodian School and for the Richmond Music Trust.
At Newland House, I offer individual lessons to children in Year 1-8. I have taken many children from beginner level up to the high grades during their time at Newland House with some gaining music scholarships to secondary schools. I also run a recorder ensemble for children in year 3 and above. All recorder players at the school work towards our popular Christmas and summer recorder concerts.
Individual recorder lessons of 30 minutes are available to children in Years 1-8, and 15 minute individual lessons are available for children in Year 1 and 2. Small group lessons are also available to beginners in Year 1 and 2 which can be a very affordable and fun way of trying out learning a musical instrument with friends.
Recorder has always been my first study instrument which I studied at the Royal College of Music and then at masters level at the Schola Cantorum in Switzerland. I also play the baroque oboe, the shawm and the dulcian. My eclectic collection of instruments has led to performing in Handel operas at Glyndebourne Opera House, plays at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (2003-date), an opera with Damon Albarn, playing the solo recorder arias with the Sixteen in their recording of Acis and Galatea by Handel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_sUjaX32Wg, touring Europe with Sir Simon Rattle (Bach, St John Passion) and playing on soundtracks for film, TV and video games such as Wolf Hall and Shrek 3.
I regularly perform and record with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Sixteen, Arcangelo, the English Concert, the Gabrieli Consort, La Nuova Musica and my own chamber groups- Ensemble Meridiana, Fontanella Recorder Quartet and the City Musick.
