Piano Teacher
My thoughts about teaching
I’m passionate about passing on a lifelong enjoyment of music to students at all ages and stages of their musical education. My pupils enjoy a holistic approach that aims at helping them to develop understanding, competence, imagination, enjoyment, perseverance and generosity in their music making. I work closely with students to help them have fun achieving these goals and have recently written a bespoke piano course aimed at helping young beginner students to begin developing these characteristics. Part of the fun of music is having a chance to explore the full range of musical styles, so from the very beginning I aim to inspire pupils with an admiration for the scope of musical expression in all its varying styles. At higher levels, pupils also get the chance to explore the cultural contexts behind their pieces and to allow this knowledge to inform the sounds, styles and interpretations that they’re creating to produce authentic, exciting artistic performances of their own
My Musical Experiences
I have had a passion for mastering the piano and its repertoire since I was 6 years old! After much patient teaching, I graduated with first class honours and the Silver Medal (the highest award given at undergraduate level) from Trinity College of Music in 2007. As a soloist, I made my concerto début as a junior scholar there at St John’s, Smith Square aged 17. I went on to perform Brahms’ gargantuan 2nd piano concerto under conductor Benjamin Zander whilst still an undergraduate there. In chamber music, I have been privileged to perform Schumann’s Piano Quintet with the internationally-renowned Carducci Quartet. I also directed my own chamber ensemble, the Freya Piano Trio as musicians in residence aboard various cruise ships for a number of years. As an accompanist, I have performed with principal flautist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Pailthorpe, as well as working with flautist, Gülşen Tatu and pianist Gülsin Onay at music festivals in London, Turkey and South Korea. 4 years ago, I stepped into the new area of choral direction and worked for 3 years as the musical director of the Sheen Gate Choir, notably directing Schubert’s wonderful Eb major Mass, and Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem”. I now work as a church music director, where I equip and direct musicians in choirs, orchestras, chamber ensembles and rock bands! I am also a composer, and have written several liturgical settings for choir, and a piano course for young children!
