My thoughts on teaching
I am a professional cellist and teacher with over twenty-five years of experience. I am passionate about teaching the cello and it is a privilege that I have been able to share my knowledge and inspire the next generation over the last two decades, teaching children as young as four up to undergraduate and post-graduate level.
My vision for all of my pupils, regardless of standard, is that they maximise and realise their potential whilst they are enjoying learning the discipline of playing the cello, enabling them to grow both as a musician and person. With regards to inspiration, I motivate my pupils with analogies, challenging questions and demonstrating depending on their learning style. Thinking outside the box is vital to me: I always aim to pass on my knowledge in a manner which will engage my pupils and this obviously varies greatly depending on the individual.
I always teach my pupils in a manner which makes them self sufficient and less reliant on me. By encouraging them to be their own “personal detective,” they can listen critically and self-motivate between lessons. Many of my pupils, as a result, are entered for auditions, concerts, competitions and ABRSM examinations where appropriate.
Regarding my performing career, for the past fifteen years I have been a regular cellist with The Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. I have regularly toured to Europe, America and Asia, playing at leading venues such as the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Carnegie Hall in New York. Over the years I have participated in high profile collaborations with major soloists and conductors, both in the concert hall, recording studios and performed all over the world.
In addition I have appeared as guest principal with the City of London Sinfonia and have also played as co-principal for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
I also have an extensive portfolio of recordings and session work including working with artists including Adele on her bestselling Album, “21” and been nominated the most wanted artist on Classic FM TV.
