Samantha Thomas

Over the past two years, I have taught Drama and LAMDA at Newland House, where I have focused on using drama techniques to support and encourage students in realising their full creative potential. I regard Drama as a powerful medium through which pupils can develop essential communication skills and build confidence within a positive and engaging environment. I believe it is crucial for young learners to refine these skills at every opportunity, ensuring that when significant occasions arise, they can express themselves with clarity, presence, and emotional impact — enabling them to truly connect with and inspire others. I have extensive experience in running West End drama workshops and directing productions, having worked with West End summer schools in the UK and internationally. In these roles, I have guided young performers through every stage of the creative process, from script interpretation and character development to rehearsal techniques and performance preparation. My approach focuses on fostering a supportive and inspiring environment where students can build confidence, develop their skills, and explore their creativity.

LAMDA

I have found that preparing for and undertaking a LAMDA examination both inspires and empowers pupils to discover their voice while developing confidence in public speaking. Students gain a strong sense of accomplishment when receiving their certificates, and their confidence continues to grow with each recital and examination experience. I remind my students that, regardless of results, the very act of entering the examination room and presenting their pieces is an achievement in itself — something many adults would find daunting.

In addition to increased self-confidence, parents often share how LAMDA has enabled their children to express themselves more clearly and has significantly enhanced their speaking and listening skills. Many parents also report notable improvements in their child’s ability to read aloud, alongside a broader vocabulary. For those new to LAMDA, it can be remarkable to witness their child memorising and recalling text independently for the first time.

Furthermore, LAMDA Grades 6, 7, and 8 carry UCAS tariff points, meaning they can support students in securing a place on their chosen higher education course.

The skills gained through LAMDA — vocal expression, clarity, and lasting confidence — provide students with valuable tools they can carry forward throughout their lives.

At Newland House the LAMDA strands that are offered are as follows:

  • Public Speaking
  • Shakespeare
  • Acting
  • Verse and Prose

Theatrical Experiences:

I am a professional Musical Theatre performer and concert soloist who has been fortunate to enjoy a varied career in the West End and beyond. After graduating with First-Class Honours in Musical Theatre from the Guildford School of Acting, I made my professional debut during my final term in Les Misérables in the West End, where I performed as cover Cosette and swing.

I then spent several years in the West End production of Wicked at the Apollo Theatre, London. Having the incredible opportunity and privilege to cover and play the role of Glinda on numerous occasions whilst also appearing in the ensemble. Other highlights include playing Hayley in Jet Set Go at MTFest (The Turbine Theatre) and working with Trevor Nunn and Don Black on The Third Man at the Menier Chocolate Factory — an experience I greatly value.

I have also been honoured to perform at events such as An Evening with Sir Bryn Terfel and The BBC Concert Orchestra (Royal Albert Hall), the Olivier Awards (2016), West End Live, and the What’s On Stage Awards (Prince of Wales Theatre, 2016/2019, and London Palladium, 2024). Alongside this, I have enjoyed developing new work in workshops, including roles such as Edith in A Tale of Fellowship (Actors Church, London), The Devil’s Advocate (London Workshop), and For Tonight, an original new musical workshop.

I am also proud to be part of The Welsh of the West End, a group that reached the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent and has since performed at venues across the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Wales Millennium Centre with the Novello Orchestra in A Night at the Musicals.

In addition to live performance, I have contributed to professional recordings including the UK Concept Album of For Tonight and John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London Orchestra’s album of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel.

I have recently been touring the UK with Enchanted Voices, and I am currently working on the world premiere of 50 First Dates: The Musical in London with the prestigious theatre director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw.
